Designing your dream kitchen

The kitchen has long been heralded as the heart of the home—and for good reason. Not only is it one of the largest areas of the home that sets the tone for the overall style of the home, but it also plays a pivotal role as a central hub for people to come together and connect.

Whether it’s used to make your morning cup of coffee, prepare the childrens’ lunches for the day, create a feast for family and friends to celebrate a special occasion, or to simply debrief over a glass of wine at the end of a long day, rarely does a day pass where the kitchen goes unused.

While it’s so important to get your kitchen design right, if you’ve never designed a kitchen before, you may be finding it a little difficult to conceptualise what you want your kitchen to be, so we’ve put together some tips to help you decide which features you most want to include.

Open-plan design: Gone are the days where having a kitchen which was separated away from the main living spaces was appealing. Todays’ designs generally favour an open-plan layout, where the kitchen flows to the connected living spaces allowing families to continue spending time together while doing the kitchen prep. Incorporating an island, extended bench or breakfast bar forms a sense of separation from the remainder of the space, while still maintaining a feeling of openness.

Intelligent access to the garage: It’s important to consider the location of the kitchen in relation to the garage when designing the overall floorplan of your home. You’ll thank yourself later when you place the kitchen in a location that makes it easy to unload groceries from the car straight into the pantry, like what we’ve done with the Jardin home design.

Butlers’ pantry: Every high-end dream kitchen should come with a fully equipped butlers’ pantry. A butlers’ pantry provides what can essentially be treated as a second kitchen space, allowing you to do your kitchen prep out of sight or hide away post-meal dirty dishes, keeping the main kitchen space clean presentable when entertaining.

Smart layout: It’s integral you get the layout of your kitchen and cabinetry right to ensure your kitchen not only looks good, but is also highly functional. Using the ‘golden triangle’ concept is a good start, but it’s also important to think about how you and your family will use the space. Try asking yourself the following questions to determine what layout will work best for you:
• Is the refrigerator in a location where people still access it without having to disturb meal preparation?
• Is the space in between the benches wide enough so two people can work comfortably in the same space?
• How much counter space do I need?
• Is the oven installed at a height that will make it easy to get hot dishes out?
• Is the sink next to the dishwasher so you can easily scrape off dirty plates and place them straight in?
• How many steps will it take to store away clean dishes when unstacking the dishwasher?
• Will cupboards or drawers more functional for the items I’ll need to store away?

Finishing touches: Investing some time thinking about the finishing touches that will create that added sense of luxury like soft close cupboards or drawers, stone benchtops, unique tapware, cabinet handles, a garbage disposal unit or any ‘smart’ features you want to integrate will be well worth it when you see the finished product.

Custom features: Every dream kitchen will also include some unique custom features that really elevate it to the next level of luxury. Whether it’s something like a window splash back, specially crafted cabinetry or a polished concrete waterfall benchtop, if you use a custom builder, they will be able to accommodate any special request, giving you complete creative control.
