Located on a lush street in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, you’ll find this unique and elegant 19th-century mansion.

This isn’t the usual project you’d expect from Glenvill Homes. Renowned for our architectural design and build of new homes, the Covid pandemic opened the doors for a new, once-off challenge. The Glenvill team took on the opportunity to push boundaries by renovating within the existing fabric of the home instead of creating one from scratch.

The statuesque 19th-century mansion was showing its age but has a natural charm that was worth preserving. The renovation involved gutting and reformatting the entire rear of the home with a new opening that connects the kitchen and meals area to the living. The whole first floor was flipped to position the master bedroom to take advantage of the surrounding greenery and create a feeling similar to that of a Parisian apartment.

Heritage features of the home have been preserved and in some instances replicated to retain the original beauty of the era in which the home was built. During the process it was discovered that re-creating a like-for-like period entryway of the home was impossible so an interesting architectural risk was taken by installing steel-framed arched insertion doorways – a risk that has worked brilliantly.

This home is the first and one of a kind for Glenvill. A renovation project that shows design excellence is in our DNA and that we continue to be Never Ordinary – even in a space we don’t usually play.
