Get your home ready for winter

Inspiration

As the crisp air of winter approaches, it’s about time to transform your home into a cosy escape. Preparing your home for the colder months doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few strategic adjustments, you can enhance warmth, improve energy efficiency and create a snug retreat from the outdoors. Here are four essential tips to get your home winter-ready.

1. Optimise Your Heating Systems

Did you know most ceiling fans have a reverse function? By setting your fan to run clockwise at a low speed you can recirculate warm air. This simple trick can make a significant difference in maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout your home.

Similarly ensure your split system filters and ducted heating vents work efficiently by cleaning filters and ducts regularly. This not only improves air quality by removing dust, dirt and allergens but also reduces energy consumption.

2. Enhance Insulation

Don’t be a victim to the draft. Inspect for drafts around windows and doors and seal any gaps with weather seals, draught blockers, or caulking. By preventing cold air from entering and warm air from escaping, you’ll keep your home warmer.

In addition, windows can cause heat loss. For effective insulation, consider installing some shutters or block-out curtains. Shutters provide excellent insulation and light control, while block-out curtains keep indoor spaces warm and cosy.

3. Manage Room Usage

Maximise heating efficiency by closing doors to unused rooms. This keeps the heat where you need it most. If you or your family are out during the day, keep bedroom doors closed to maintain warmth in central living areas. Re-open doors to rooms as needed to enjoy a warm and cosy home throughout the day.

4. Add Warmth Underfoot

Hard flooring like timber boards or tiles can feel cold to the touch. Rugs are the perfect solution. They not only add warmth and comfort underfoot but also act as excellent insulators. The bigger the rug, the more floor area you cover, enhancing the insulation of your room.

Getting your home ready for winter doesn’t have to be a chore. With these simple tips, you can create a warm, energy-efficient, and inviting space. Embrace the season by making your home a cosy retreat where you can enjoy the beauty and comfort of winter.
